There are some experiences that feel bigger than the work itself—and my Maui Artist Residency at The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua was one of them.
Over the past few weeks, through the month of March 2026, I had the opportunity to paint live, meet guests from all over the world, and share more about my process as an artist here on Maui. What I didn’t fully expect was how collaborative it would become.
One of the most special parts of the residency was a community surfboard project.
I started with an upcycled surfboard—something that already carried its own history—and invited guests to step into the creative process with me. I titled the surfboard, “Spirit of Aloha”, and designed the imagery to be a representation of aloha and Hawai’i through five chapters, Haleakalā Sunrise, Wa’a, Koholā, ‘Ukulele & Hula, and ‘Ulu, all woven together with flower lei. Throughout the residency, people of all ages added their own marks, colors, and intentions to the board. Some were hesitant at first, others jumped right in—but every contribution became part of the story. Over 30 guests at The Ritz contributed to the board throughout the month!
There was something really beautiful about watching people connect through art like that. No pressure, no perfection but rather, just presence, expression, and a shared moment.
As the board evolved, I worked into and around those contributions while weaving everything together into a finished piece. It became less about my painting, and more about what we created together.
The final surfboard feels like a reflection of that time because it is layered, alive, and full of energy from everyone who touched it.
To everyone who stopped by, asked questions, shared stories, or added a brushstroke—thank you. You’re part of this piece in a real way.
Here are a few moments from the process, along with the finished board:

Creating this surfboard throughout the month of March was just one part of my Maui Artist Residency at the Ritz-Carlton. I also had the opportunity to read our children’s book Better Together – In Hawai’i to young readers. It was such a joy to share the story and artwork and to witness the curiosity of so many children! It warmed my heart to meet you all!
This residency reminded me of why I love what I do. Art has a way of bringing people together in the most unexpected and meaningful ways—and I’m so grateful to have shared that space with you.
With aloha,
Jules
